Problem
Over 30 MILLION STUDENTS in rural China suffer from uncorrected poor vision. Without glasses, they can’t see, they can’t learn, and they lose any chance at an equal education.
Solution
We train teachers and work with local partners to give free vision exams, eyeglasses, and eye care education in rural Chinese schools.
Impact
Eyeglasses increase students’ academics like they had an extra year of school, and increase lifetime income potential by 20%, helping them escape a cycle of poverty.
Our Students
Yanghua (Sally) is a 12-year-old sixth grade student in Supor Elementary School of Baoshan County. When she grows up, she knows for sure she either wants to be a doctor, or a teacher. Since the age of eight, when her father passed away and her mother remarried and moved to another family, Yanghua has been raised by her aunt. Despite the turmoil, she’s always known the value of education, and is known as one of the brightest and most thoughtful girls in her village of Dazhai.
However, about a year ago, Yanghua realized she couldn’t see clearly anymore, and the blackboard became a total blur to her. With the cost of glasses being several hundred yuan, she also didn’t want to burden her aunt with their cost, and struggled on in school not knowing what to do.
This past year, Education In Sight visited her school and gave Yanghua her first ever pair of glasses. Since then, she’s back on top in school, and loves “looking out from her school hall over the beautiful scenery around her”.
